January at QANC

Happy New Year friends and neighbors!

We hope you had a restful holiday. In between cooking family feasts, catching up with loved ones and (finally!) getting to put our feet up, we spent some time reflecting on how we can incorporate the values of Kwanzaa into our day-to-day lives this year. According to Dayna, “We can’t wait to get started”.

Our kids did a great job sharing about Umoja “unity” and more at our annual Kwanzaa performance. Dayna says, “We had the best, most enthusiastic program participants ever.  Smiles from the stage to the audience shined all night long.” In case you missed it, here is a taste of their celebration!

Open House

Now that 2025 is officially in gear, we are opening our doors to friends new and old. Join us on Saturday, January 25 at the Center of Excellence in New Britain to learn about what the kids will be getting up to for the Spring Watoto cycle! The program has many wonderful workshops coming up building skills in:

  • Music

  • Dance

  • Visual Arts

  • Theater

  • Creative Writing

  • Traditional Crafts

  • and much more!

This year we are getting together with our friends at East Culture Arts to celebrate Chinese New Year. We’ll be celebrating with delicious food, beautiful crafts, traditional games, and fun for the whole family! Plus you won’t want to miss the East Culture Arts dance troupe closing out the day with some special performances.

Admission is FREE and open to all, so bring your friends!

Chinese New Year

According to the Chinese lunar calendar, 2025 welcomes the Year of the Snake. An animal that sheds its skin, the Snake symbolizes transformation, indicating a year of personal growth ahead!

According to Chinese tradition, those born in the year of the snake are thought to be especially wise, calm, and strategic, making excellent problem-solvers and intuitive communicators. Want to know your zodiac sign according to Chinese tradition? Check out this calculator.

Women’s History

Once the Chinese New Year festivities are done, mark your calendar for our next big event–the 16th Annual Constance “Connie” Renee Wilson Collins Exceptional Women’s Concert. We anticipate honoring this year’s nominees on April 5. Stay tuned to find out who will be nominated this year!
