Kwanzaa in May, Celebrate New Britain & More!

After another wonderful year of growth and fun, Watoto were celebrated at our closing Kwanzaa in May gathering. We showed off their artwork at table displays, including a LIFE roadmap that illustrates each student's unique pathway to success. The celebration also included a slideshow, information booths, arts and crafts, games, and plenty of dancing! Parents and alumni came to show their support.

Watoto may be on summer break, but Nzinga’s Daughters are turning up the heat! They performed last Saturday at Celebrate New Britain, sharing their musical talents with many attendees from across the city. They also hosted a booth sharing information about Watoto. Children walking by were excited to try out some rock painting, while adults tested their knowledge of Juneteenth with a trivia game and received information about how to sign their kids up for next year’s program.

If you missed Nzinga’s Daughters this time around, don’t worry–there are plenty of opportunities to groove with the band in June! They have a busy events calendar including:

  • June 6th: Parent Engagement through African Drumming at MLK Middle School

  • June 10th: Juneteenth Celebration at Klingberg (Private Event)

  • June 11th: Interactive Performance at Linden St Elementary School (Private Event)

  • June 13th: Juneteenth Celebration at HRA

  • June 15th: Juneteenth Celebration for the Town of Portland

  • June 15th: Interactive Event with the New Britain Museum of American Art

  • June 17th: Interactive Performance at Emmanuel House (Private Event)

  • June 19th: Juneteenth Celebrations for the Towns of Plainville, Litchfield and Bristol

  • June 22nd: Juneteenth Celebration for the Town of Berlin

We want to say a big Thank-You to Main St. Foundation and to Hartford Healthcare, who will be sponsoring our Plainville Juneteenth Celebration. This is such a wonderful opportunity to celebrate our heritage and we are grateful for their community support!
